Invincible creator Robert Kirkman says he is eager to see his superhero franchise cross over with Magic: The Gathering, following previous publisher partnerships with The Walking Dead.
Robert Kirkman is looking to bring his superhero universe to the tabletop. In a recent video interview with Polygon conducted ahead of the season four premiere of Invincible on Prime Video, the creator revealed that he is very open to a crossover with Magic: The Gathering. Kirkman joked that anyone with connections to Wizards of the Coast should help set up the collaboration. This follows a long history between the creator and the publisher, given that The Walking Dead was the subject of Magic's very first Secret Lair drop featuring original mechanical cards back in 2020.
That initial Walking Dead release helped pave the way for the Universes Beyond initiative, which now brings massive external franchises like Final Fantasy and Marvel directly into the trading card game. While some purists still debate whether these pop culture crossovers turn the game into the tabletop equivalent of Fortnite, the massive commercial success means external IPs are now a permanent fixture of the release calendar. An Invincible set would certainly require toning down the comic series signature gore, but the expansive roster of heroes, villains, and alien species makes it a natural thematic fit.
Translating the series into card mechanics also offers plenty of creative potential for designers. Transform mechanics could easily represent secret identities or characters like Monster Girl, while Sagas could capture major narrative moments like the Invincible War by spawning token hordes upon completion. With Wizards already partnering with Marvel and planning sets around Star Trek and The Hobbit, adding Image Comics heavy hitters to the mix feels like a plausible next step for the ever-expanding platform.
