Rising Costs Are Now the Leading Reason Players Are Dropping Game Pass and PS Plus

New data from Circana reveals that rising costs have become the primary reason players are cancelling services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, reflecting broader financial pressures across the gaming industry.
The financial squeeze on modern entertainment is hitting our game libraries harder than ever. According to new data shared by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, cost is now the primary driver behind subscription cancellations for services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online in the US. Over 40 percent of players who cancelled their memberships recently pointed to budget constraints as the main reason, marking a clear jump from the numbers recorded earlier in the year.
To be clear, this shift does not necessarily mean subscriber numbers are in freefall right now. Instead, it shows that for the people walking away, the value proposition simply no longer fits into tighter household budgets. In fact, many respondents noted that they actually liked the service they were dropping, but they just could not justify the recurring monthly fee against rising living expenses and general gaming inflation.
This trend arrives as little surprise given the steady wave of price hikes across hardware, accessories, and software over the past year. Between console price bumps and restructuring across major subscription tiers, the cost of staying plugged into the ecosystem continues to climb. When everything from memory components to day one releases demands more out of player wallets, maintaining multiple active memberships is becoming an increasingly difficult luxury for the community. Eurogamer originally reported these insights from Circana's consumer survey data.
As digital ownership models and subscription fatigue collide, platform holders will need to work much harder to prove their ongoing value. Players are happy to support services that respect their time and wallets, but when the monthly bill starts competing with other essential entertainment, something has to give.
