Riot Games Pulls the Plug on 2XKO Less Than a Year After Launch

Riot Games is ending active development on the free-to-play fighter 2XKO less than a year after its launch, offering full refunds for recent purchases while keeping servers online.
Active development on 2XKO is officially coming to a close this December, as reported by Eurogamer. Riot Games announced the winding down of its free-to-play tag fighter in a detailed blog post, citing a lack of long-term financial and player sustainability. Despite positive reviews and a dedicated core following among diehard fighting game fans, the game struggled to retain a broader audience. Riot confirmed that all in-game purchases made prior to August 20 will be fully refunded by November, and servers will remain online for the foreseeable future so players can still enjoy matches.
Before development officially wraps, players can still expect previously announced characters like Lux and Samira to drop alongside a final patch in October. Once active development ceases, every character in the roster will be unlocked for everyone. Ranked lobbies will be disabled, shifting public online play strictly to skill-based casual matchmaking, and a massive cosmetic bundle will be made available for purchase. The team behind the project spent nearly a decade in development, starting under the working title Project L after the creators of Radiant Entertainment joined Riot.
This outcome highlights the brutal realities of the modern live-service market, particularly for competitive genres trying to capture and hold a mass-market audience. 2XKO joins a growing list of high-profile free-to-play fighters, including MultiVersus, that struggled to maintain the massive concurrent player bases required to fund ongoing content pipelines. While the team's ambition to modernize tag-team fighting and attract casual players through duo mechanics was clear, the numbers simply did not align with Riot's operational requirements. Fortunately, no new layoffs have been announced alongside this shutdown, offering some relief after significant staff reductions hit the team earlier in the year.
