RimWorld: Odyssey - Because Cannibal Space Pirates Are Officially a Thing Now

RimWorld's Odyssey expansion lets you build gravships, explore new biomes, and eventually conquer space, turning your colony into a fleet of cannibalistic spacefaring adventurers (or at least, that's how I'm playing it). Expect more chaos, more choices, and more ways for your colonists to meet a hilariously gruesome end.

Right, so RimWorld, that charming little colony sim where your settlers are just as likely to build a thriving farm as they are to, shall we say, *recycle* their less productive members, is going vertical. And by vertical, I mean into orbit. Ludeon Studios just dropped the Odyssey expansion, and fair dinkum, it’s a game-changer. (Original source: Eurogamer)

Remember when RimWorld was just about surviving the elements and the occasional psychic squirrel attack? Yeah, those were the days. Now, according to Eurogamer, we’re building gravships, exploring alien biomes, and eventually blasting off into the void. Sounds like someone's been hitting the space beer a little hard, doesn't it?

The big news is you can now construct a mobile colony – a gravship – and pimp it out with all the essentials: living quarters, labs (for… experiments, naturally), workshops, the whole shebang. You start small, using your ship to scout the planet for resources, hidden treasures, and maybe a souvenir exotic bird or two. It's like a planetary treasure hunt, only with more opportunities for things to go horribly, hilariously wrong.

And speaking of planets, Odyssey throws in a bunch of new biomes to explore. We're talking fungal glowforests (spooky!), gaseous scarlands crawling with mechanoids (terrifying!), lush grasslands (finally, a break!), blizzard-ravaged glaciers (cold!), and even molten lava fields (hot!). Each biome has its own unique challenges and resources, so choose your landing spots wisely, or you might end up regretting it. Think of it as a planetary mixtape of pain, only you're the DJ.

Oh, and because RimWorld isn't already chaotic enough, there are 40 new animals to contend with. Sparrows, bluebirds, wolves, scimitar cats, seals, otters, porcupines, prairie dogs… You can tame them, train them, trade them, or, if you're feeling peckish, eat them. Choice is yours, mate! Plus, fishing is now a thing, so you can finally catch that elusive space carp you've always dreamed of. (Probably not a space carp, actually. But a bloke can dream, right?).

But here's where things get really interesting. As you explore, you’ll stumble upon trap-rigged reactors, insect-infested caves, and crashed orbital platforms. These locations often contain gravcores, which you can use to upgrade your ship and venture further afield. Eventually, you'll be able to leave the planet's atmosphere and start mining asteroids, raiding orbital platforms, and exploring hollowed-out satellites. Just watch out for space scavengers. They don't share their loot nicely.

Tying it all together are new multi-part quests you can snag from ancient maps, passing visitors, and anonymous signals. Ludeon Studios warns that space is a harsh place, so you'll need to build your ship to survive. Airtight walls, heaters, oxygen pumps, airlocks – it's all crucial to keeping your colonists (and their pets) alive in the vacuum of space. And don't forget those vac suits! No one wants to see a colonist explode from depressurization. (Okay, maybe *some* people do... but let's not encourage them).

And if all that wasn't enough, there's new gear, weapons, enemies, and even a new late-game threat: the mechhive. When you find the mastermind behind all this mechanized mayhem, you'll have a choice: destroy it and shut down every mechanoid for good, or take control of its power. Bloody hell, decisions, decisions!

RimWorld: Odyssey is the game's fifth expansion since it launched way back in 2013. It's available on Ludeon's website and Steam. So, if you're ready to take your cannibal space pirate dreams to the next level, then get out there and boldly go where no RimWorld colony has gone before!
