Polygon goes hands-on with Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, exploring how developer Asobo is trading traditional stealth mechanics for a fast-paced, combat-heavy action platformer starring Sophia.
Developer Asobo and publisher Focus Entertainment recently showcased Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy during the Xbox Games Showcase, and the third installment in the franchise is making a massive pivot. According to a hands-on preview by Polygon, the upcoming title completely abandons the stealth roots that defined the first two games and dives headfirst into an action-adventure framework. Set in 1333 on a mysterious island near Crete, the game follows fan-favorite secondary character Sophia before she crossed paths with the de Rune siblings. Players control Sophia as she flees her pirate upbringing, chasing dreamlike visions toward Minotaur Island alongside her smuggler friend Leni.
Combat takes center stage in this new chapter, introducing a frantic and deadly system built around parries, kicks, and a grappling hook used to pull elevated archers down to earth. Sophia operates on a tight three-hit health pool, but enemies fall just as fast, and securing a kill restores a lost point of health to keep the momentum going. While previewers noted that the fluid combat can feel a bit repetitive once players master the rhythm, it marks a stark contrast to the slow burn of earlier titles. Platforming, puzzle solving, and deadly traps still occupy plenty of screen time, all set against a meticulously researched Minoan-inspired backdrop that leans heavily on historical consultation.
For longtime fans, the departure from the iconic rat hordes and careful hiding mechanics might take some adjustment. Even so, the shift toward a faster, combat-focused identity shows that Asobo is willing to take creative risks rather than simply recycling past formulas. As players across console and PC look toward the release, the real question is how the community will respond to a beloved narrative-driven series morphing into a fast-paced action-platformer.
