Resident Evil Requiem Director Explains Why Leon Brings More Gore and Experience to the Table

Polygon's interview with Resident Evil Requiem director Kōshi Nakanishi reveals why the upcoming horror title features amped-up gore for returning hero Leon S. Kennedy, contrasting his seasoned brutality with the pure survival horror of newcomer Grace Ashcroft.

Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be a masterclass in survival horror contrast, bridging the gap between newcomer tension and seasoned action. In a recent interview with Polygon, director Kōshi Nakanishi opened up about what players can expect when the game launches, highlighting the stark difference between playing as nervous newcomer Grace Ashcroft and returning veteran Leon S. Kennedy. While Grace relies on pure survival instincts and very limited ammo, Leon returns as a battle-hardened professional who has been fighting bio-weapons since the 1998 Raccoon City Incident.

According to Nakanishi, that immense experience is the direct reason why Requiem turns up the dial on gore. After stepping away from the main storyline for the Ethan Winters era in Resident Evil 7 and Village, Capcom wanted Requiem to tie together multiple narrative threads from across the franchise's history. Because Leon is so comfortable in combat after nearly three decades on the job, the development team used heightened blood and carnage to visually emphasize his effortless lethality and mechanical mastery with weapons and melee attacks.

That brutality was fully showcased during recent hands-on demos, particularly in a claustrophobic boss fight against an oversized mutant named the Chunk inside a cramped attic. Rather than relying solely on sheer size, the team designed the encounter around the spatial pressure of a tight hallway, forcing players to deal with mutating flesh squeezing through narrow walls while an industrial-toned soundtrack underscores Leon's stoic approach. It is a smart approach that honors the series roots while giving cross-platform horror fans a fresh mechanical dynamic to master.
