Report Shows Early Halo Multiplayer Prototype Canceled After Activision Collaboration Explored

A newly surfaced report reveals that an early Halo multiplayer prototype involving Sledgehammer Games was canceled in July, adding to a growing list of shelved projects as Microsoft explores external development partners for the franchise.

Recent reporting from industry insiders points to a turbulent multiplayer roadmap for Microsoft's flagship shooter franchise. According to details shared by insider Rebs Gaming and corroborated by earlier reports from Windows Central, a proposed Halo multiplayer prototype involving Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games was tested and subsequently canceled in early July. The project reportedly never advanced past the basic blockout stage, where teams test fundamental movement and mechanics before a game is officially greenlit.

The canceled prototype represents only one piece of a much larger puzzle regarding the future of Halo multiplayer. Additional reports indicate that another unannounced multiplayer project, known internally as Project Ekur and originating from early battle royale concepts, was also shelved in July. These abandoned concepts highlight how aggressively Xbox has been testing different structural directions for the franchise while Halo Infinite continues to serve as the primary competitive outlet nearly five years after its initial launch.

Despite these setbacks, the door may not be completely closed on outside development partnerships. Recent credits for Halo: Campaign Evolved reveal that roughly 15 external support studios contributed to the Unreal Engine 5 release, signaling a massive shift in how Halo Studios builds games. Bringing in studios with heavy shooter experience could give Microsoft the extra horsepower it needs, but these canceled prototypes prove that leadership is still carefully evaluating which partnerships actually make sense for the community's long-term competitive home.
