A newly surfaced report reveals that Nintendo once partnered with Ubisoft Milan on a Zelda spin off starring Ganondorf before ultimately canceling the project.
Recent reports from Insider Gaming reveal that Nintendo and Ubisoft Milan once teamed up to develop a Legend of Zelda spin off starring Ganondorf in the lead role. The project reportedly began when Ubisoft pitched an original character concept, but Nintendo intervened and requested that the iconic villain take center stage. Unfortunately, the prototype did not meet Nintendo standards and the publisher ultimately scrapped the project.
While the idea of a Ubisoft developed Zelda title might sound surprising, Nintendo has a history of trusting external studios with its crown jewel franchises. Companies like Capcom handled the Oracle Game Boy Color titles, Koei Tecmo brought us the Hyrule Warriors series, and Ubisoft famously blended Mario with its Rabbids franchise. Nintendo and Ubisoft have shared a strong working relationship for years, often supporting platform launches together.
Though this specific collaboration ended in cancellation, fans of the Gerudo king might still see him step into the spotlight soon. Recent leaks point toward a potential 2D Zelda project slated for 2027 that could feature Ganondorf as the main playable character. Given that Nintendo itself originally pushed for a Ganondorf led concept with Ubisoft, exploring the idea internally feels like a natural next step for the franchise.
For now, community attention remains fixed on upcoming franchise milestones. Nintendo has confirmed a remake of Ocarina of Time for the Switch successor arriving on November 5, giving players plenty to look forward to while future spin off concepts continue to swirl across social feeds and creator channels.
