Report Links Blizzard and Nexon to Develop a New StarCraft Shooter

Industry reports suggest Blizzard has partnered with Nexon to develop a new StarCraft shooter, with a potential announcement anticipated at BlizzCon this September.

Blizzard is reportedly teaming up with Korean gaming powerhouse Nexon to bring the StarCraft universe back as a shooter. According to a report from Korean outlet dnews, picked up widely by communities on ResetEra, Nexon signed a cooperation contract last year with Blizzard focused on content development for the iconic sci-fi intellectual property. Nexon has allegedly established a dedicated internal team within its shooting division for the project, and reports indicate that veteran StarCraft modder Choi Jun-ho has been brought on board to help guide the development process.

This partnership aligns with mounting rumors that Blizzard is gearing up for a major StarCraft reveal at BlizzCon this coming September. Reliable industry reporting from last year already pointed to Blizzard developing an internal StarCraft shooter under the leadership of former Far Cry developer Dan Hay. If these reports hold true, this marks Blizzard's third known attempt at turning the strategy franchise into a shooter, following the cancellation of StarCraft Ghost two decades ago and the internal codename Ares project that was scrapped in 2019.

Collaborating with external publishing and development giants is nothing new for Blizzard, which previously partnered with NetEase to launch Diablo Immortal on mobile platforms. Bringing in Nexon, the company behind studios like Embark and online hits like MapleStory, suggests a serious cross-continental effort to handle the scale of a modern multiplayer shooter. For players, the big question is how a new StarCraft shooter will carve out its own identity alongside Blizzard's existing juggernaut, Overwatch, especially with expectations high for a fresh take on the classic faction warfare of the Koprulu Sector.
