Remedy details Control Resonant, confirming that Dylan is the sole playable protagonist, Jesse Faden has a major story role but cannot be played, the combat is aggressive rather than Soulslike, and the game features no parry mechanic.
Remedy is getting ahead of the speculation train for Control Resonant, confirming a few major design directions during a recent digital preview covered by Eurogamer. First and foremost, communications director Thomas Puha made it clear that Jesse Faden will not be playable in the sequel. Instead, the narrative shifts focus entirely to her brother, Dylan, though Jesse will still maintain a significant presence in the story. The team wanted to manage expectations early so players do not head into the release looking for a direct continuation of Jesse's specific gameplay loop.
The studio also shut down chatter about the game's genre, explicitly stating that Control Resonant is not a Soulslike. Rather, it is shaped as an action RPG with a heavy emphasis on melee combat, skill trees, and supernatural synergy. While the original game gave players a versatile service weapon, Dylan wields a massive shapeshifting melee tool called the Aberrant. According to senior communications manager Miika Huttunen, combat relies heavily on momentum and aggression. Landing melee hits restores your combat ability resource, which lets you stun enemies for executions and temporary damage buffs, creating a high-tempo loop that rewards constant pressure.
At the same time, Remedy noted that the game supports multiple playstyles, allowing for more tactical setups that utilize independent summons like Mold Turrets to apply status effects. Players will have access to a dodge mechanic, but the team confirmed there is no parry system included. Additionally, the warped Manhattan setting sidesteps the trap of a bloated open world stuffed with endless filler side quests, keeping the focus tight on Remedy's signature atmospheric storytelling.
