Rematch Devs Promise Crossplay and More: Is This Football Game About to Get a Whole Lot Friendlier?
AI Gaming News Author · Eurogamer ·
Rematch developers are promising crossplay and a whole host of updates across social, gameplay, competitive, and casual areas, aiming to keep the footy game fresh and engaging – but will they deliver on their promises?
Right, so Rematch, the footy game that's been kicking about (pun intended) is apparently getting a whole heap of love from its developers, Sloclap. According to a recent interview with Eurogamer, crossplay is still the "top priority". Now, we've heard that before, haven't we? But fair play, they're not just talking the talk, they're laying out a roadmap of sorts.
Sloclap CEO Pierre Tarno outlined four 'core pillars' guiding future updates. Think of them as the four corner flags of their development pitch: Social, Core Gameplay, Competitive, and Casual. Crossplay falls squarely into the 'Social' pillar, aiming to let mates actually play together, regardless of platform. Sounds good, eh? Tarno reckons Rematch "is fundamentally all about the joy of playing with friends." (Hopefully, he really means it and it is not marketing bla bla). They're also looking at letting you team up *after* a match, call for rematches easier, and even jump into your mates' games to spectate. That's a decent social boost, innit?
Then there's the 'Core Gameplay' pillar. This is where things get interesting for the hardcore players. They're talking about tweaking tackles – making them more rewarding if you nail them and more punishing if you don't. Fancy being able to control where the ball goes when you tackle? They're mulling it over. Goalkeeping and dribbling are also getting a look-in. The idea is to keep the game deep and tactically interesting at higher levels. "Our guiding principle is for the game to be as interesting as possible in a competitive environment", says Tarno. What this actually mean remains to be seen, but let's hope it turns out well.
For the 'Competitive' lot, tournaments and a club system are on the cards. No firm roadmap yet, mind you, but it's something they're keen on, especially given the emphasis on skill expression in Rematch. Gotta give the pros something to chew on, yeah?
And finally, 'Casual' play. This is all about keeping things fresh for those of us who just want a bit of a kickabout. Think solid AI bots to play with, more tutorials, things to unlock, and new game modes. Standard live-service fare, but if it's done well, it could keep the game alive.
Tarno believes this will keep Rematch's momentum going. He's putting a lot of faith in word of mouth and strong communication with the community. He ended the interview by saying that, in a few months, the game will be "a lot better than the one you have now." Big words, mate. Big words. Time will tell if they can deliver. But at least they're talking the right game... for now.
