Reckon Pikachu's New TCG Pocket Promo is a 'Free'bie? Think Again, Mate!

Pokémon TCG Pocket is celebrating its first anniversary by releasing a new full-art Pikachu promo card, which players can obtain by purchasing or owning the game's Premium Pass, as reported by Game Rant's Michael Brandon Ingram. Alongside this premium offering, the anniversary also dropped the exciting new 'Mega Rising' expansion, introducing Mega Pokémon to the game.
Blimey, another year flown by in the digital ether! Pokémon TCG Pocket is celebrating its first anniversary, and you know what that means – confetti, cake, and usually some 'gifts' that come with a cheeky little asterisk. Our mate Michael Brandon Ingram over at Game Rant (cheers for the heads-up, Michael!) clued us in on the latest celebratory nugget: a stunning, full-art Pikachu promo card.
Sounds ace, right? A new Pika to add to the collection! But here's the rub, like finding a rare spell component only to realise the vendor only takes premium moon crystals. To get your hands on this electrifying little beauty, you'll need to be a subscriber to the game's Premium Pass. Or, if you're already a Premium Pass holder, you can snag it for just one Premium Ticket. So, not exactly falling out of a free daily pack, eh?
The Premium Pass, for those not fully initiated into its digital depths, offers a few perks: an extra pack each day (always nice for that gacha hit), special premium missions for Hourglasses and Premium Tickets, and access to an exclusive shop bursting with unique promo cards and cosmetics. This new Pikachu, with its 'Spark' attack dishing out extra damage to Benched Pokémon, is now joining that exclusive club. Plus, they've thrown in some snazzy new 'Mega Rising' cosmetics – Mega Blaziken ex sleeves, field art, and a coin. Pretty flashy stuff if you're into decking out your digital arena.
Now, this ain't Pikachu's first rodeo with a promo spotlight, mind. The little yellow legend has popped up in various full-art iterations before, including another Premium Pass exclusive and a New Year's login bonus. It even got the immersive art treatment way back in the 'Genetic Apex' set. Pikachu, always the crowd-pleaser, eh? Good on ya, mate.
But let's not be all doom and gloom about the pay-to-play promo. The anniversary festivities also brought something genuinely exciting for everyone: the 'Mega Rising' expansion! This bad boy officially introduces Mega Pokémon into the game, bringing fan favourites like Mega Absol, Ampharos, and Altaria into the fray. That's a proper game-changer, adding a whole new layer of tactical wizardry to battles.
So, while we might raise a digital eyebrow at the Premium Pass being the key to this new Pikachu card, there's still plenty to get hyped about with the new mechanics and content. It's a classic dance between the shiny freebie (that isn't quite free) and the robust new gameplay. What do you reckon, fair dinkum anniversary celebration, or a bit of a cheeky upsell? Either way, TCG Pocket is definitely keeping things interesting. (Source: Game Rant, article by Michael Brandon Ingram, published Nov 1, 2025).
