Rainbow Six Tactics Brings Turn-Based Strategy and Optional Permadeath to Ubisoft's Franchise

Ubisoft announced Rainbow Six Tactics, a single-player, turn-based spin-off featuring an optional permadeath mechanic and a curated roster of 15 Siege Operators.

Ubisoft is shaking up its long-running tactical shooter franchise with a brand new single-player spin-off called Rainbow Six Tactics, recently revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Moving away from real-time multiplayer combat, the upcoming title trades first-person gunfights for turn-based strategy. Players will pull from a focused roster of 15 familiar Operators ported over from Rainbow Six Siege, building squads for high-stakes missions where planning every single move matters.

Game director Martial Potron recently shared details with IGN about the game's headlining feature, which is permadeath. If players choose to enable the setting across any difficulty level, heavily injured Operators will become permanently unavailable for the rest of the campaign. Losing a key team member early on will force players to adapt their strategies on the fly with a depleted roster, adding a heavy layer of tension to every breach and clear operation.

Translating the tense multiplayer dynamics of Siege into a turn-based format required some creative design choices from the development team. The game will feature a dynamic fog-of-war system that forces players to rely heavily on drones and scouting to uncover hidden threats without feeling unfair. Environmental destruction remains a core pillar, letting squads plan custom entry points using explosives and synchronized actions just like the original tactical roots of the series.

With a release window currently set for 2027, players still have plenty of time to wait before getting their hands on Tactics. In the meantime, Ubisoft continues to support the main Siege title well into its eleventh year, with new updates rolling out regularly. Whether Tactics can successfully bridge the gap between twitch shooters and tactical turn-based strategy is a big question, but it offers a genuinely fresh angle for the community to watch.
