Amazon is beta testing a generative AI feature on Prime Video called Video Recaps, which creates automated catch-up videos using dialogue, music, and narration for major shows like Fallout.
Amazon is pushing further into generative AI with a new beta feature on Prime Video designed to catch viewers up on previous seasons of major shows. According to a report from IGN South Africa, the streaming platform is testing Video Recaps on select Prime originals, including hits like Fallout, Reacher, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The tool uses AI to scan a series, identify major plot points, and synthesize dialogue, music, and voiceover narration into a neat summary package. For a gaming community that spends plenty of time bingeing high-budget adaptations alongside our usual session queues, the feature aims to solve the friction of waiting years between seasons.
Prime Video leadership is framing the test as a major step forward for accessibility and convenience. Gérard Medioni, vice president of technology at Prime Video, noted in a statement covered by The Hollywood Reporter that the feature represents a first-of-its-kind application of generative AI for streaming. The goal is simple, as Amazon wants to make it easier for casual viewers to jump back into sprawling narratives without needing to rewatch entire seasons or hunt down fan-made recap videos on YouTube.
At the same time, rolling out generative AI into creative spaces always invites a healthy dose of skepticism from audiences who value human editing and curation. While automated tools might save time, players and streaming fans alike will likely be watching closely to see if these AI-generated summaries actually capture the nuance and emotional beats of complex stories, or if they just feel like corporate algorithms rushing you to the next episode.
