Polygon reviews President Curtis, the first official Rick and Morty spinoff on Adult Swim, highlighting its heavy focus on American history, sitcom structural nods, and Keith David's standout lead performance.
Adult Swim is expanding its flagship animated universe with President Curtis, the very first official spinoff from the Rick and Morty franchise. As reported by Brian VanHooker over at Polygon, the ten-episode first season premieres on July 26 and shifts the spotlight entirely to the commander-in-chief, voiced by Keith David. The series leans heavily into the rapid-fire, high-concept comedy that fans expect, but trades interdimensional sci-fi tropes for hyper-specific American history jokes and satirical folklore.
Created by Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, the show finds President Curtis operating independently of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, joined instead by his chief of staff Banks, played by Stephanie Beatriz, and his bodyguard O'Doyle, voiced by Jim Rash. The visual style remains faithful to the parent show, but the narrative structure borrows cues from classic television sitcoms, complete with instrumental openings and running gags about historical figures and presidential lore. Background plotlines involving robot origins and mythical heritage add some serialized depth to the otherwise standalone adventures.
While the show relies on an avalanche of historical references that might appeal more to history buffs than casual viewers, it ultimately succeeds by staying true to the character's core appeal. Just as Rick and Morty carved out a space by catering to science fiction enthusiasts, this new venture embraces its niche historical obsessions. For fans following the evolution of Adult Swim's animation slate across streaming and cable, President Curtis proves that strong supporting characters can successfully carry their own franchises without losing the chaotic energy of their origins.
