An early hands on preview of Pokémon Pokopia reveals that the upcoming Switch 2 exclusive is far more than an Animal Crossing clone, blending life sim elements with environmental puzzles and TM based crafting.
Nintendo is steering its monster collecting juggernaut into new territory with Pokémon Pokopia, arriving March 5 as a launch window exclusive for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Initial trailers sparked plenty of comparisons to Animal Crossing and Minecraft, given the blocky aesthetic and familiar crafting loops. However, a recent hands on preview by Polygon reveals that developer Koei Tecmo is building something much closer to a puzzle game disguised as a life sim. Instead of just decorating islands and chatting with villagers, players step into the shoes of a transformed Ditto on a mission to restore a trainerless world.
The core gameplay revolves around environmental manipulation and tactical puzzle solving rather than passive island management. To attract and discover new Pokémon, players must use collected Technical Machines, or TMs, to reshape the terrain and fulfill specific habitat requirements. A dehydrated Squirtle teaches you Water Gun, which you then use to revive other creatures and cultivate tall grass for species like Bulbasaur. Moves like Rock Smash and Cut cost PP that must be managed by eating food, adding light survival elements. Finding new Pokémon relies on deciphering clues scattered across the map, requiring specific item placement and move combinations to entice rare creatures out of hiding.
For a franchise that has spent decades refining its turn based RPG template, Pokopia represents a genuinely bold creative swing. By blending the comforting daily routines of social sims with puzzle driven progression, it aims to appeal to both casual players and longtime fans looking for a fresh spin on catching them all. As the Switch 2 era begins, this unexpected crossover between creature collection and sandbox building could easily become one of the platform's most engaging social spaces for players to share with friends.
