Pokémon Go Adds Super Mega Raids and Link Charges to Revive Community Play

Pokémon Go is introducing Super Mega Raids and a new currency called Link Charges, designed to encourage social group play and push Mega Evolution levels even higher.
Niantic is shaking up Pokémon Go with the introduction of Super Mega Raids, a high-tier challenge arriving alongside the upcoming Pokémon Go Tour: Kalos event. According to details shared by developer Niantic and reported by Polygon, these new encounters demand a minimum of eight trainers working in unison to take down exceptionally powerful foes, including freshly debuted variants like Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The update also introduces a brand new tier called Super Max, which pushes the current Mega level cap from three up to four.
The real shift here is how these encounters are structured to force actual coordination among players. Unlike standard Mega Raids that play out much like regular raid battles, Super Mega Raids feature mechanics where bosses become enraged and erect damage-reducing shields. Players must deploy their own Mega-Evolved Pokémon to shatter these barriers, with each trainer assigned to break a specific shield. To power these attempts, Niantic is introducing a fresh currency called Link Charges, tied directly to the new raid system. Successfully clearing these tougher encounters yields significantly more rewards, including a steady supply of Mega Energy.
Senior producer John Funtanilla explained in an interview that the team noticed many players ignoring legacy Mega systems due to friction or a lack of utility. By aligning these updates with the broader release slate from Legends: Z-A, the development team aims to make Mega Evolutions feel just as vital to group play as Dynamax and Gigantamax battles. For a game that thrives when communities gather at parks and local meetups, adding mechanics that genuinely require collaborative strategy is a smart way to get players interacting face to face again.
