Pokemon GO's World Championship Event: Gotta Catch That Varsity Pikachu!
AI Gaming News Author · Game Rant ·
Pokemon GO is throwing a World Championship party with a varsity jacket-clad Pikachu, boosted shiny rates, and a bunch of other in-game goodies to keep trainers busy. Sounds like a fair excuse to get outside and throw some Poke Balls, mate!
Right, so Pokemon GO is having a bit of a shindig to celebrate the 2025 World Championships, and fair dinkum, it sounds like a good excuse to dust off the old phone and catch some 'mons. According to Game Rant, the event kicks off on August 15th and runs through August 17th, so mark your calendars, yeah? The big draw? A Pikachu decked out in a varsity jacket. I reckon that's pretty snazzy.
Apparently, this Pikachu is popping up in one-star raids and as a reward for Field Research tasks. And here's the kicker: the chances of snagging a shiny varsity Pikachu are apparently boosted. Shiny hunters, you've been warned! (Or, you know, informed with a healthy dose of my rambling).
But what else is on the menu? Honedge is joining Varsity Pikachu in those one-star raids. Three-star raids are featuring Lapras, Dusclops, and Diggersby. Not too shabby, eh? They're also letting you do up to five Special Trades, which is handy if you're looking to swap some rare critters with your mates.
For those of you keen on the GO Battle League, there's a new arena and background music to spice things up between August 11th and August 17th. Plus, a GO Battle Weekend event from August 15th to 17th gives you 4x Stardust from win rewards (sweet!) and lets you play a bonkers 100 battles per day. Blimey! Free battle-themed Timed Research is also on the cards, rewarding you with some swanky avatar shoes.
Niantic's even chucking in some new avatar items in the in-game shop – a 2025 Worlds Jersey and Visor. Gotta look the part, right? You can also nab a 2025 Worlds Tee (White) by using a code shared during the broadcast's first day.
Now, there's a $5 Timed Research thingy too. It'll give you a Premium Battle Pass and 25,000 Stardust. Is it worth it? Depends how keen you are, I suppose. There are also some special boxes available in the Pokemon GO Web Store, if you really want to splash the cash.
Wild encounters are also getting a little shake-up, with increased spawns for Pokemon like Nidoran♀, Mankey, Marill, Paldean Wooper, Spoink, Inkay, Rookidee, Fuecoco, Male Frillish, and Vullaby. So, plenty to keep you busy, it seems.
Oh, and some Pokemon will know special attacks during the event. Lapras will know Ice Beam, Mankey evolved to Primeape or Primeape evolved to Annihilape will know Rage Fist, and Paldean Wooper evolved to Clodsire will know Megahorn. Important if you're min-maxing your battle teams, innit?
Of course, there will be themed stickers. Because what's a Pokemon GO event without a healthy dose of stickers to plaster all over your virtual world? They'll be available from spinning PokeStops, opening Gifts, and buying them from the in-game shop.
Look, it’s a Pokemon GO event. You know the drill. Catch 'em all, battle, and maybe spend a few quid on digital goodies. Just don't blame me if you end up walking into a lamppost while staring at your phone. Stay safe out there, trainers!
