Modding group MercuryEnigma has figured out how to inject custom Mystery Gift events into Nintendo Switch ports of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, allowing players to obtain rare event Pokemon like Celebi and Mew.
As reported by Polygon, the dedicated fan group MercuryEnigma has successfully found a way to inject custom events into Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. By using a PC WiFI chip to emulate a local wireless console connection, the team managed to trigger the classic Mystery Gift feature on unmodded Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 systems. This breakthrough allows players to send custom items and fan-made Pokemon directly into the game without altering their console hardware.
This community milestone arrives just as the classic Kanto remakes prepare for official Pokemon Home integration in October. While the upcoming Home support rewards players with a Celebi for completing the regional Pokedex, transferred Pokemon cannot return to their original save files. MercuryEnigma's method bypasses traditional limitations and opens the door for players to acquire rare or event-exclusive creatures like Celebi and Mew directly within the Gen 1 environment.
For longtime fans, this project taps right into the nostalgia of the original hardware event distributions while modernizing the approach for current platforms. The work is still progressing, but the successful demonstration of a Level 50 event Celebi has the community eager for a public guide. It is another great example of player ingenuity keeping classic multiplayer traditions alive across modern hardware generations.
