Pokemon Champions Review In Progress: A Solid Core Trapped In A Barebones Package

An early review of Pokémon Champions from IGN South Africa praises the addictive core combat but criticizes the barebones launch content, the lack of single-player modes, and a surprisingly limited roster of 186 Pokémon.
For decades, players have wanted a dedicated, battle-focused entry in the franchise that cuts out the extensive grinding and badge collecting to focus purely on competitive combat. According to a recent review in progress by Scott White for IGN South Africa, Pokémon Champions steps into that classic Pokémon Stadium lineage as a free-to-start, turn-based online battler. The core combat remains as addictive as ever. The gameplay loop of building a team, predicting your opponent, and executing simultaneous moves hits that nostalgic sweet spot, proving that the classic battle system can still keep players hooked late into the night.
However, the excitement quickly fades once you look past the basic matches, because the launch version suffers from a severe lack of content. The game offers virtually no single-player modes, offline challenges, or creative ways to test team builds, leaving online PvP as the only option available. Furthermore, the roster sits at a meager 186 Pokémon, missing staple legendaries, early-game evolutions, and plenty of fan favorites while leaning heavily on the obvious crowd-pleasers. Competitive players and casual fans alike are left with a very narrow set of options for how to play.
While live service updates will likely flesh out the roster and add modes over time, launching in such a restricted state makes it hard to recommend right now. A rock-solid foundation means nothing if the house only has one room. Until developer The Pokemon Works expands the offerings and fills out the Pokédex, Champions feels more like a proof of concept than a complete experience.
