PlayStation Plus subscribers are voicing heavy frustration over the October 2026 Essential tier lineup, citing a lack of broad appeal and missing spooky season themes.
PlayStation has officially revealed the monthly free games coming to the PS Plus Essential tier for October, and the community response has been decidedly muted. As reported by Game Rant, the upcoming selection includes F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2, spanning both PS4 and PS5 libraries from October 6 through November 2. Rather than sparking excitement, the trio of titles has left many subscribers feeling like the monthly drop lacks a true anchor or must download system seller.
Social media and community spaces quickly lit up with frustration, with players noting that the lineup relies too heavily on niche genres instead of offering broad appeal. Even the traditional running joke about buying a game right before it hits a subscription service failed to gain traction this month, simply because few players seem interested in picking these titles up independently. Subscribers also pointed out a missed opportunity to lean into the spooky season, expressing disappointment that October's Essential drop skipped out on a prominent horror or Halloween themed experience.
All eyes now turn to the upcoming PS Plus Extra and Premium tier drops to salvage the month for players craving bigger experiences. While co-op extraction shooter Mycopunk is already confirmed to hit the Extra tier later in October, Essential tier members are left wondering if the base subscription is delivering enough value. Ultimately, monthly drops live and die by community momentum, and Sony faces an uphill battle keeping retention high when the frontline offerings fail to capture player interest.
