PlayStation and Xbox engagement data proves the live service titans are impossible to dethrone

Data from Circana reveals that PlayStation's top five most-played games in 2025 were identical to 2024, highlighting the immense difficulty of breaking into the live service market.

If you look at the latest player engagement data, the top tier of console gaming looks remarkably cemented in place. According to Circana figures shared by senior director Mat Piscatella and reported by Eurogamer, the top five most played games on US PlayStations in 2025 were an exact carbon copy of 2024. Fortnite held the crown, followed by Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto V, Roblox, and Minecraft. Xbox saw a tiny bit of shuffling within its top five, but the exact same roster of titles dominated the platform across both years.

This stability highlights why breaking into the modern live service market is such a daunting gamble for developers and publishers. When foundational giants like Fortnite and GTA V command the daily routines of millions of players across crossplay ecosystems, carving out a permanent player base requires immense resources and a fair bit of luck. The allure remains obvious because the financial upside of a runaway live service hit can generate billions, as Fortnite proved early on. Yet the graveyard of failed seasonal shooters and short lived multiplayer experiments tells a much harsher story about player retention.

For communities, this means our social hubs and digital living rooms are staying put for the long haul. We are investing our time, battle pass progress, and virtual wardrobes into a very stable ecosystem where the big players rarely move. While fresh titles like Arc Raiders occasionally manage to find a receptive audience and carve out success, the vast majority of new contenders struggle to survive their opening months. As long as these entrenched titans keep delivering continuous updates and fresh seasonal content, the throne room at the top of the charts is going to remain occupied.
