Sony is launching a free ad supported live television feature on the PlayStation 5 in the U.S., offering over one hundred channels and on demand content directly through the console's Media tab.
Sony is shaking up how players use their consoles by rolling out Live TV on the PS5. According to an announcement from IGN South Africa, the new feature launches today for users in the United States. It brings more than one hundred live channels and a robust on demand library straight to the hardware without requiring any paid subscriptions or extra downloads. Players can access the service simply by navigating to the Media tab on their console while signed into the PlayStation Network.
The lineup covers a lot of ground across various entertainment categories. Viewers can tune into movie channels like MovieSphere by Lionsgate and 50 Cent Action, catch television favorites such as The Walking Dead and Community, or stream dedicated anime content from Crunchyroll including Naruto and Death Note. Sports fans get access to programming from FOX Sports, NBC Sports Now, and the UFC, while news, weather, and creator led content from outlets like Spotify and First We Feast round out the initial offering.
For a modern gaming community that treats the console as an all in one entertainment hub, this update makes a lot of sense. Many players already use their hardware for streaming apps between gaming sessions, and baking ad supported television directly into the interface cuts down on switching devices. Sony has confirmed plans to expand the feature to Canada and other regions in the future, meaning a wider audience will soon be able to check out the new programming without touching their wallets.
