Sony is raising US prices for all PlayStation 5 models by fifty dollars starting tomorrow, citing a challenging economic environment, inflation, and manufacturing pressures.
Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 5 hardware is getting more expensive in the United States, following a recent PlayStation Blog post detailing a blanket fifty dollar price increase across the entire console lineup. Effective tomorrow, August 21, the base PS5 will rise from four hundred ninety nine dollars to five hundred forty nine dollars, while the Digital Edition moves from four hundred forty nine dollars to four hundred ninety nine dollars. Even the high end PS5 Pro, which launched at an already steep six hundred ninety nine dollars, is climbing to seven hundred fifty dollars.
Sony pointed to a challenging economic environment as the driver for the changes, mirroring similar adjustments made in Europe, the UK, and Australia over the past year. Company executives previously highlighted global inflation and manufacturing tariff pressures as ongoing hurdles, noting that chipset production costs have proven difficult to scale down over the console lifecycle. While accessories are currently dodging the price increase, the move follows a broader industry trend of rising hardware costs as Microsoft also introduced hardware price hikes earlier this year.
As reported by Game Rant, the US market was the last major region where Sony managed to hold the line on launch pricing, but macroeconomic pressures have finally forced the change.
