Playground Games debuted Forza Horizon 6 at the Xbox Developer Direct with a May 19 release date, introducing stunning Japanese map design alongside a controversial new player housing and settlement feature called The Estate.
Playground Games used the recent Xbox Developer Direct to drop a deep dive into Forza Horizon 6, alongside confirming a May 19 release date. The footage showcased gorgeous Japanese biomes filled with high speed driving and mountain switchbacks. Yet, one major addition has sparked debate across the community about whether players actually want open world construction tools in a street racing sandbox.
The new feature, called The Estate, gives players a massive, completely empty mountain valley to transform into a personal settlement. According to design director Torben Ellert, the mechanic draws inspiration from abandoned rural Japanese properties known as Akiya, letting players build private tracks, showrooms, or hangout spots that friends can visit. While the concept sounds ambitious on paper, it sits in a strange spot for a series built on pure driving momentum. Players already have eight traditional, handcrafted houses to buy across the map, complete with fully customisable garages for tinkering with builds.
The core tension comes down to whether sandbox building adds value or simply clutters a meticulously designed open world. Traditional player homes fit seamlessly into the environment, offering quick pit stops without disrupting the visual flow of the map. Turning a section of the countryside into a blank canvas might appeal to creators who love building custom spaces for community meets, but many casual drivers will likely stick to the roads. As detailed by Rock Paper Shotgun, the inclusion of permanent car meets and detailed garage interiors means there are already plenty of ways to show off cars without turning the game into a property management sim.
