Mantic Games is bringing Plants vs. Zombies to the tabletop with a cooperative board game launching on Kickstarter, featuring card-based defense mechanics and miniatures.
PopCap's iconic tower defense franchise is swapping digital screens for cardboard and miniatures. Mantic Games has announced that a cooperative Plants vs. Zombies board game will launch on Kickstarter on October 14. Known for previous tabletop adaptations of major properties like Halo, Hellboy, and Worms, Mantic is designing this project as a fast-paced, one-to-four-player experience that aims to recreate the chaotic energy of the video games.
The gameplay relies heavily on card management and strategic defense. Players deploy Plant cards featuring classics like Peashooters and Cherry Bombs, alongside utility items like shovels and lawnmowers to manipulate their garden defenses. On the other side, simultaneous Zombie card draws dictate incoming horde movements, adding a layer of cooperative tension as groups try to stop enemies from reaching the house. The campaign will feature a standard release alongside a Deluxe Edition packing pre-assembled miniatures and a standalone Night Edition expansion.
This physical adaptation arrives at an interesting time for the franchise, following the mobile launch of Plants vs. Zombies 3 and the recent release of Plants vs. Zombies Replanted. While the series has spent years living on phones and PCs, transitioning to a tabletop format gives cooperative gaming groups a new way to engage with the IP. It also highlights how nostalgic video game franchises continue to find fresh life in the physical space, appealing to players who value hands-on game nights just as much as digital sessions.
