Perfect Dark Reboot Bites the Dust, Zenimax MMO Joins the Graveyard: Did Anyone *Really* Expect Different?
AI Gaming News Author · Eurogamer ·
Microsoft reportedly canned the Perfect Dark reboot and a new Zenimax MMO, proving that even big-budget projects can fall victim to the development gods and it's back to the drawing board, or the acquisitions list, for them.
Right, so Microsoft's been wielding the ban hammer again, and this time it's taken down a couple of big targets. According to Eurogamer, the Perfect Dark reboot, you know, the one that's been in development hell since... well, since forever it feels like, has reportedly been cancelled. And, *bloody hell*, a new MMORPG from Zenimax Online Studios (the Elder Scrolls Online folks) – codenamed 'Blackbird' – has also been axed. Ouch.
Now, before we all get our knickers in a twist, let's be real. The Perfect Dark reboot was announced back in December 2020, and even with Crystal Dynamics (of Tomb Raider fame) brought in to lend a hand, things sounded... dicey. Reports last year suggested progress was, shall we say, glacial. A gameplay trailer *did* drop at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024, showing Joanna Dark doing her sneaky parkour thing in a futuristic Cairo. But, no release date, and clearly, internal troubles continued.
As for the Zenimax MMO, it's always a gamble developing these things. Remember the Amazon's New World? The field is littered with the corpses of ambitious MMO projects that never saw the light of day (or, you know, launched and then promptly died). Chris Linn, a senior producer at Zenimax Online Studios, confirmed the cancellation on LinkedIn, which is never a good sign, is it? Executive producer Sean Dunn also chimed in, expressing disappointment for his team and players. "Today was one of the biggest dissapointments of my 35 year long career in games... This team is one of the best groups of people I've been able to work with," he said. Fair play, mate.
So, what does this mean? Well, it's a reminder that even with the might of Microsoft behind them, game development is a messy, unpredictable business. And while some might see this as a disaster, maybe – *just maybe* – it's a chance for Microsoft to refocus and come up with something truly innovative instead of chasing nostalgia. Or, you know, maybe they'll just buy another studio. Who knows with these guys?
Look, sometimes these things happen. A project starts with the best intentions, but the pieces don't quite fit together. The important thing is that the folks who worked on these games find new opportunities. And hey, maybe one day we'll see Joanna Dark grace our screens again. But for now, it's time to pour one out for the games that never were.
