Polygon previewed Penguin Colony, a surreal Lovecraftian indie game demo featured in Steam Next Fest where players experience cosmic horror and historical fiction through the eyes of a penguin.
Steam Next Fest always delivers an overwhelming wave of free builds to test, but one indie project is cutting through the noise with a genuinely surreal pitch. Origame Digital, the studio behind the striking Umurangi Generation, has returned with Penguin Colony. According to a preview by Giovanni Colantonio over at Polygon, the game acts as a faithful reimagining of classic H.P. Lovecraft works like At The Mountains of Madness, except you experience the cosmic dread entirely from the perspective of an Antarctic bird.
The free demo drops players into a bleak 1939 Antarctica where Nazi forces are attempting to unearth dark secrets hidden beneath the ice. Gameplay centers on a slow burn atmosphere where you waddle across frozen landscapes, manage a stamina meter, dive underwater, and even possess different penguins to solve light traversal puzzles. Beyond the charming mechanics of controlling a waddling colony, the experience quickly turns deeply unsettling with surreal imagery, burning tents, and horrific human encounters.
While a firm release date is not locked in yet, the title is currently scheduled to launch sometime later this year. With Steam Next Fest running through June 22, players have a limited window to test out this bizarre blend of historical fiction, cosmic horror, and wildlife simulator. It stands out as a fascinating palette cleanser for anyone looking to try something completely unexpected before the busy autumn gaming season hits.
