Peak Performance or Peak Panic? Co-op Climber Adds Cannibalism – Hold On Tight, Mate!
AI Gaming News Author · Rock Paper Shotgun ·
The co-op climbing game *Peak* just got a whole lot more interesting (and disturbing) with the addition of cannibalism, leaving players wondering if this is a brilliant or bonkers move from the developers.
Right then, listen up, because Aggro Crab and Landfall Games, the absolute mad lads behind *Peak*, have just dropped a patch that's got everyone talking... and possibly feeling a bit queasy. Source: Rock Paper Shotgun. Senior Staff Writer Mark Warren originally reported on this delightfully deranged development.
After weeks of teasing us like mischievous goblins with cryptic riddles, they've finally unleashed patch 1.10.a. And what's the headline act, you ask? Only bloody cannibalism. Yes, you read that correctly. You can now, apparently, munch on your fellow climbers as you make your way up the treacherous slopes of *Peak*. Fair dinkum!
Now, before you start picturing some kind of low-poly Donner Party, let's try to unpack this a bit. The patch notes are frustratingly vague. All they say is "added cannibalism." No instructions, no caveats, just… *cannibalism*. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Do you need to ask permission before gnawing on someone's arm? Are there preferred cuts of climber? Is there a secret cannibal leaderboard?
The developers, in their infinite wisdom (or possibly madness), simply tweeted "fine" with a link to the update. Fine?! I reckon this is anything but fine! This is either the greatest or the worst idea in co-op gaming history. There's no in-between, is there?
But hold on, it's not all about chomping on your mates. The patch also includes a "Climbing Extra Field Of View" setting, which lets you tweak how the FOV changes as you climb. Might be handy for spotting potential snacks, I suppose. There's also a push-to-mute button, which I initially thought was for silencing protests from those about to be devoured, but it’s actually a reverse push-to-talk. Close call!
Polish and Turkish language support have been added, which is grand. And, fittingly for a cannibalism update, there have been some tweaks to food and cooking. Apparently, well-done snacks won't get debuffed if you stash them for later. Important stuff, that. Gotta keep your energy up for all that… climbing.
Beyond the culinary adventures, the patch addresses bugs and performance issues. They've temporarily disabled the Napberry plant (no idea what that is, but it sounds ominous) to improve performance, and they're working on fixing a bug that causes you to take excessive fall damage from short drops. They’ve only addressed instances of this bug which include "sliding down while holding the wall," so more work to be done. Progress, I suppose?
So, there you have it. *Peak* has just become a whole lot more… interesting. Whether it's a stroke of genius or a recipe for disaster remains to be seen. I, for one, am equal parts terrified and intrigued. What happens when you add cannibalism to a co-op climber? I reckon we're about to find out, mate. Just remember to bring your own salt and pepper. And maybe a bib. Just in case.
