The Patlabor Ezy anime film trilogy has received official release dates and a new trailer, bringing the classic mecha franchise back to screens starting this May.
The iconic mecha franchise is finally making its grand return. According to a recent report by Polygon, the upcoming Patlabor EZY film trilogy has officially locked in its premiere schedule alongside a brand new trailer that gives fans their first real look at the modernized production. The trilogy kicks off on May 15, followed by the second installment on August 14, and the final chapter arriving in March of next year. Alongside the theatrical rollout, the project will also release as an eight-episode original video animation.
The new footage bridges the decades by opening with classic clips from the 1988 original before transitioning into the refreshed current aesthetic. Character designs have received modern updates while staying true to their roots, and the production team is utilizing 3D CG for the mechanical units. Based on the trailer, the blend of CG vehicles against 2D backgrounds looks surprisingly cohesive, featuring fluid action sequences that include a memorable clash between a Labor unit and a menacing mechanical snowman.
For those new to the series, Patlabor stands out in the mecha genre by grounding its massive robots as everyday industrial heavy machinery used by an underfunded, overworked Tokyo police unit. It functions just as much as a workplace comedy as it does an action anime, which is a big part of why the premise has endured for decades. With original creators Headgear involved and direction by Yutaka Izubuchi at J.C. Staff, this revival brings back veteran talent to ensure the project stays true to what made the original special for anime fans.
