Pathfinder Publisher Paizo Teams Up with DriveThruRPG Following Severe Financial Trouble

Tabletop giant Paizo brings its entire Pathfinder and Starfinder catalog to DriveThruRPG to boost sales following the devastating bankruptcy of its former distributor, Diamond Comics.
Paizo, the studio behind the major tabletop roleplaying titles Pathfinder and Starfinder, has announced a massive new partnership with DriveThruRPG to bring its full official catalog to the digital storefront. According to a report by Sam Nelson at Polygon, more than 1,200 titles are now available, with physical print books joining the platform in the coming months alongside account synchronization features. While this move is a win for convenience-minded players who prefer managing their rulebooks and character sheets in one place, it highlights a much darker reality behind the scenes for one of tabletop gaming's most prominent publishers.
The expansion comes as Paizo struggles to recover from a catastrophic financial blow following the January 2025 bankruptcy of its former distributor, Diamond Comics. That collapse left the publisher completely cut off from ten million dollars worth of inventory meant for major retailers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Because of an exclusive contract, Paizo was unable to pivot to a new distributor while legal battles played out, resulting in nearly two million dollars in losses last year, layoffs affecting twelve staff members, and scaling back on organized play support and free PDF distribution.
For a community that views tabletop RPGs as a vital social space and an essential outlet for creative storytelling, watching a heavyweight competitor to Dungeons and Dragons weather this kind of storm is worrying. Paizo launched a direct sales website in November and is now leaning heavily into digital partnerships to steady the ship. For players, supporting these new digital storefront options is a practical way to help keep a foundational pillar of the tabletop community alive while they navigate a turbulent recovery.
