Path of Exile 2 Finally Cracks Its Worst Technical Headaches

Grinding Gear Games has resolved Path of Exile 2's long-running shader and device removed crashes in partnership with Nvidia, bringing major stability relief to endgame players.

Grinding Gear Games has finally put to rest two of the most persistent technical issues plaguing Path of Exile 2, with game director Jonathan Rogers celebrating the breakthrough with a well-earned bottle of champagne. In a recent developer update, Rogers detailed how a new Nvidia Game Ready driver, version 680.88, works alongside the latest patch to tackle the notorious device removed crashes and sluggish shader compilation times that have frustrated endgame players for months.

The device removed error was particularly painful, resulting in sudden game freezes, black screens, and performance drops triggered by graphics driver conflicts. According to Grinding Gear Games, the bug proved difficult to address because initial reports were met with skepticism regarding how often it actually occurred. The development team ultimately had to ship an entire physical PC setup loaded with a reproducible build directly to Nvidia to prove the extent of the issue.

Meanwhile, the second fix targets the game's heavy shader compilation process. Visual effects and assets were failing to cache properly due to Nvidia driver problems filling up shader cache folders, leading to prolonged load screens and visual stutter. While the root cause required external cooperation, the studio managed to optimize the game engine by reducing shader file sizes, preventing the cache from overflowing so quickly. For a community pushing hard through endgame content across PC, console, and handheld setups, these stability upgrades are a massive win as the game marches toward its full 1.0 launch.
