Paramount has enlisted Max Landis and Danny McBride to develop separate script treatments for a new G.I. Joe movie, continuing a studio trend of working with controversial creators under David Ellison.
Paramount is moving forward with a new film adaptation for its dormant G.I. Joe franchise, tapping controversial screenwriter Max Landis and actor-writer Danny McBride to develop separate treatments. According to a report by Polygon, the studio is exploring different directions for the Hasbro toy brand by commissioning parallel scripts. For a detailed breakdown of the development, you can read the full report over at Polygon.
The inclusion of Max Landis has drawn significant industry attention due to allegations of sexual and emotional abuse made against him during the height of the #MeToo movement in 2019. While no criminal charges were filed, the accusations led to his management dropping him and his active projects halting. Under CEO David Ellison, Paramount has shown a repeated pattern of working with embattled Hollywood figures, following previous studio decisions to involve creators like John Lasseter and Brett Ratner on high-profile projects.
From a creative standpoint, the dual approach offers two very different tonal paths for a franchise that has struggled to find a consistent cinematic footing since the 2021 Snake Eyes spinoff. While Landis is known for gritty and dark genre takes like Chronicle and Bright, McBride brings a heavy dose of comedy and irreverence honed through shows like Eastbound Down and his work on the recent Halloween trilogy. Given that G.I. Joe originates as a classic toy and cartoon property, leaning into levity may prove to be the safer bet for audiences looking for pure entertainment rather than dark grit.
