Paradox Restricts Discord Profile Pictures After Hearts of Iron 4 Atatürk Ban Backlash

Paradox Interactive is updating its Discord guidelines to ban real-world profile pictures of historical figures born after 1800 following community backlash over an Atatürk ban.

Paradox Interactive is overhauling its Discord server guidelines following a major community uproar over the temporary ban of a user displaying a photograph of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Game director Laszlo Pieper acknowledged that the studio handled the situation poorly, noting that Paradox aims to avoid taking political stances on historical figures. Under the upcoming rules, community members will be barred from using real-world profile pictures of political or military figures born after January 1, 1800, unless they are official in-game portraits.

The controversy escalated quickly last week when a server moderator defended the ban by citing Atatürk alongside sensitive historical debates, triggering community outrage and subsequent review bombs on Steam. Players also voiced long-standing frustrations regarding language support for the region, compounding the tension. While official in-game portraits from Hearts of Iron 4 will still be permitted, prominent leaders of Nazi Germany remain strictly prohibited on the platform.

Pieper explained that the strict new chronological cut-off is designed to remove the burden of interpretation from volunteer moderators and eliminate gray areas in the server rules. Community members will have a seven-day grace period to comply once the updated guidelines officially go live. However, Paradox confirmed that individuals who crossed the line into harassment and direct threats against developers and staff during the fallout will remain permanently banned.
