Owlcat Games has confirmed that generative AI is being used strictly for internal prototyping and technical testing on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, assuring players that all final assets will be human made.
Developer Owlcat Games has addressed how generative AI is being used behind the scenes on its upcoming sci-fi project, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Known for titles like Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, the studio recently confirmed during a press briefing that AI tools are currently part of their internal pipeline. According to PR manager Katharina Popp, the technology is strictly confined to prototyping, placeholders, and early technical tests. This includes visualizing how a 2D image might translate into 3D or experimenting with color palettes to speed up iteration times.
Owlcat has firmly maintained that none of these generated elements will make it into the finished release. The studio emphasized that everything players see in the final version of the game will be entirely human made, with no AI involvement in writing or voice acting. This follows a period of community scrutiny that began back in 2024 when a job listing mentioned concept generation using modern tools. At the time, the studio clarified that neural networks were only being utilized for creative search, mood boards, and vision coordination before traditional artists ever pick up a stylus.
As studios across the industry experiment with internal efficiency tools, transparency remains a major talking point for players and creators alike. While the backlash around AI in game development is understandable given recent industry trends involving job displacement, Owlcat is drawing a hard line between backend experimentation and final consumer-facing products. For a community that values authentic artistic vision and human storytelling, drawing that distinction clearly is essential to maintaining player trust before launch day arrives. As reported by Robert Purchese over at Eurogamer, the studio is keen to keep the focus squarely on the talent of its human workforce as development on the Mass Effect inspired project continues.
