Overwatch Prepares for Sombra's Massive Role Shift to Support in Season 5

Blizzard is moving Sombra to the support role in Overwatch season 5, introducing a new active playstyle and healing mechanics while attempting to preserve her aggressive identity.

Blizzard is rolling out one of the most ambitious hero changes in the history of Overwatch as Sombra transitions from the damage roster into the support role. Speaking in an interview with Polygon at BlizzCon 2026, associate game director Alec Dawson admitted that the long-in-development rework has sparked some anxiety among longtime mains. However, the development team insists that the core identity of the character remains intact. Instead of turning her into a passive healer who sits safely in the backline, the team designed her new kit to support an aggressive and active playstyle.

The redesign centers on tackling Sombra's traditional triangle of lethality, which balances her damage output, invisibility, and hacking capabilities. Her new secondary fire ability, called Hot Fix, delivers significant healing over a 12-second window. This tool allows her to assist diving teammates like Genji or Winston without forcing her to constantly babysit the rest of the roster. Dawson noted that while the shift requires a major mindset adjustment for players accustomed to a damage role, the mechanics will quickly click once fans get hands-on time with her.

Sombra is not the only character receiving major attention as season 5 approaches. Roadhog is also slated for a substantial rework, and a brand new support hero named Doctrine will join the roster. These updates arrive on October 6, continuing Blizzard's ongoing efforts to shake up the meta and keep the hero shooter fresh for its dedicated community across PC and console platforms.
