Overwatch Finally Adds Jetpack Cat After a Decade of Development

Blizzard is adding Jetpack Cat to Overwatch as a Support hero in Season 1, nearly a decade after the concept was initially rejected for being too ridiculous.
Overwatch is shaking up its roster by dropping five new heroes at once, and the standout addition is a character fans have wanted for a decade. Jetpack Cat, also known as Fika, is officially joining the game as a Support-class hero when Season 1 launches. Originally dismissed by former game director Jeff Kaplan back in 2017 as too ridiculous for the narrative, the flying feline now fits right into a universe that already features a genetically engineered gorilla and a mech-piloting hamster. Blizzard art director Dion Rogers noted that the team had to figure out how to ground the concept in sci-fi logic before bringing her to the roster. Fika comes equipped with a jet propulsion rig invented by Brigitte, turning a stray cat into a high-mobility flying menace.
Gameplay-wise, Jetpack Cat is set to introduce some wild new strategies to lobbies when she arrives on February 10. She stands out as the game's first permanent-flight hero, complete with a tether mechanic that lets her carry teammates across the map. Her kit also includes Biotic Pawjectiles for healing allies and damaging enemies, a pulse ability called Purr that heals while knocking back opponents, and the ability to physically grab enemies and toss them off edges to their deaths. Voiced by veteran actor Jennifer Hale, Fika promises to completely disrupt the current meta and give content creators plenty of clip-worthy moments.
This massive character drop marks a significant shift for Blizzard as they lean harder into creative character designs and bold gameplay mechanics. As hero shooters continue to evolve to keep players engaged across PC and console, introducing a flying cat with displacement mechanics shows a willingness to embrace pure sandbox fun. Players will soon find out if her mobility and tether tools break standard team compositions or simply open up new avenues for creative plays. You can read the original reporting over at Polygon.
