Overwatch Design Team Built Brand-New Tech Just to Fit Shion and Her Motorcycle

Blizzard reveals that building Shion, the 52nd hero in Overwatch, required brand-new hitbox technology to accommodate her motorcycle ability and complex combo-focused kit.

Overwatch has introduced plenty of wild designs over the years, ranging from genetically modified animals to giant robotic protectors, but developer Blizzard faced an entirely new engineering hurdle while building Shion, the game's newest damage hero. Speaking in a recent interview with Polygon, senior game producer Kenny Hudson revealed that Shion's signature motorcycle ability broke standard hitboxes during early development. Because the character actually became harder to hit while riding the vehicle due to a shrinking collision box, the team had to invent dynamic tech that stretches the hitbox to properly encompass both rider and bike.

That motorcycle was central to Shion's identity from the very beginning, serving as the centerpiece for a hero designed around high-mobility flanking and intricate combo chains. Early iterations of the character even featured a Devil May Cry style meter that rewarded players for pulling off consecutive moves. The development team ultimately scrapped the meter because it made matches feel too stressful and proved nearly impossible to balance without making the character overpowered. Instead, Blizzard shifted focus to how her standard fire, charged blast, and dash abilities work together to create fluid engagement patterns.

Balancing a high-skill ceiling hero is always a challenge for live-service games, and Hudson acknowledges that no amount of internal testing can fully predict how a community will break a new character in live matches. Designed as a glass cannon archetype, Shion rewards players who master her movement and ability weaving while demanding precise positioning to survive. As modern players dive into the latest meta across console and PC platforms, finding the optimal ways to manage her mobility and cooldowns will define how she shapes competitive and casual lobbies alike.
