Overwatch 2 Director Admits Blizzard 'Dropped the Ball' on Story – Can They Pick It Back Up?

Overwatch 2's director has admitted they've been neglecting the story side of things, and fans are letting them know. The big question is: can Blizzard conjure up the magic to bring back the lore we all crave?

Right, so Overwatch 2. Cracking gameplay, colourful heroes, the whole shebang. But there’s been a nagging feeling for a while, hasn't there? Like a wizard who forgot the last ingredient for a crucial potion. According to IGN South Africa, Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller has acknowledged that Blizzard kinda, sorta, maybe… dropped the ball when it comes to story and lore. Bloody hell.

In an interview with content creator Jay3 and voice actor Conor McLeod (cheers to Michael Cripe at IGN for covering this), Keller admitted that the team is aware of the fans' discontent. Seems like those gorgeous animated shorts that built up the Overwatch universe (remember Reinhardt battling robots? Goosebumps!) have become fewer and farther between. It's been nearly two years since the last proper cinematic. Ouch.

But why the change of pace? Well, remember that PvE Hero mode everyone was hyped for? Blizzard canned that in the summer of 2023. Apparently, it was a bit of a reset moment. (Read: a magical mishap of epic proportions) Keller says they want to get back to focusing on the story, calling the universe and characters “one of the best parts of Overwatch.” Fair dinkum.

"I think for us to say that Overwatch 2 is firing on all cylinders, we need to have some of that come back," Keller said, according to IGN. Translation: story matters, people!

Now, they've been making some changes that players seem to like. New PvP game modes, free loot box cosmetic rewards (who doesn't love free loot?), and a whole roadmap of content planned. (A roadmap! Someone's been reading the instruction manual.) But even with all the shiny new bits, the lack of story is still a sore point for many.

One suggestion floating around is an Overwatch TV series. Keller isn't against the idea, saying “we’d love to do that.” A TV series! Imagine the possibilities. Though, let’s be honest, promises in the gaming world are like potions – sometimes they explode in your face. Still, the enthusiasm is there.

The question is, can Blizzard actually deliver on their promises? Are they just saying the right things, or is there a genuine desire to bring back the story elements that made Overwatch so special? Only time will tell if they can recapture that old magic.

Overwatch 2 is currently running Season 17: Powered Up, which has some cool retro-gaming skins and a G.I. Joe crossover. But will that be enough to satisfy the lore-hungry masses? Reckon not. Get back to those shorts, Blizzard! We want a story!
