The original Resident Evil trilogy and Breath of Fire IV are now available on Steam with GOG compatibility tweaks and a launch discount, though they arrive bundled with controversial Enigma DRM.
PC players looking to revisit where survival horror and classic RPGs really found their footing have a reason to celebrate. As reported by Mark Warren over at Rock Paper Shotgun, the original versions of Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 have finally landed on Steam alongside the classic Capcom RPG Breath of Fire IV. These are the same revamped builds developed in partnership with GOG, meaning they include modern compatibility fixes designed to run smoothly on today hardware. They even function well on Steam Deck with a bit of community controller setup.
To sweeten the launch, all four titles are currently sitting at a 50 percent discount on Valve's storefront until April 15. While getting these foundational pieces of gaming history natively on Steam is a massive win for preservation and accessibility, the release comes with a notable catch. The Steam versions include third party Enigma DRM, a piece of anti-piracy software that has previously drawn criticism and performance concerns from technical outlets like Digital Foundry when attached to other Capcom releases like the Resident Evil 4 Remake.
For digital collectors and modern players who prefer keeping their entire library centralized in the Steam ecosystem, this drop is hard to ignore, even with the software overhead. It highlights the ongoing tug of war between modern digital convenience, publisher security measures, and the preservation of gaming heritage.
