Progressing through Onimusha: Way of the Sword means dealing with malice barriers that block critical paths and hide secondary objectives across Kyoto. According to a recent guide by Polygon, your standard sword won't work on these dark structures. Instead, players need to invest several hours into the campaign before tackling a specific early milestone.
To shatter these barriers, you must reach the Careful What You Wish For main mission, which typically takes about five hours of playtime. Completing this quest involves investigating the Hachidai Rikison Shrine and defeating the boss Rasho-gan. Once a short cutscene plays out, you unlock the Oni Strength skill tree, granting you the power to interact with malice barriers and dismantle them by holding the action button.
Unlocking Oni Strength also opens up new combat possibilities for your playthrough. You can use the ability to break through enemy shields and defensive stances, or grab environmental objects like explosive barrels to hurl at foes.
