Olympic gold-medal figure skater Amber Glenn is turning heads not just on the ice, but at local game stores as an unabashed Magic: The Gathering superfan who uses the card game to maintain her mental health.
Team USA figure skater Amber Glenn made history at the Winter Olympics by landing a clean triple axel to help secure a team gold medal, but her achievements off the ice are just as impressive to the tabletop gaming community. During recent Olympic coverage, Glenn proudly showed off her personal Magic: The Gathering collection, casually pulling cards like Pyroblast and Last Chance straight from her pockets. Based on her description of multi-player matches and her trips to local game stores, it is safe to say she is an avid Commander player who takes her hobby seriously.
Glenn has been remarkably open about how crucial tabletop gaming is for her mental health and maintaining a healthy balance outside of elite sports. She keeps her most prized cards safe at home, but she makes time to hit local game stores for new releases, recently picking up items from crossover sets like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Tarkir. She is even spreading the hobby to her fellow Olympians, introducing teammate Alysa Liu to the cardboard crack life with a booster pack unboxing that yielded some incredible pulls. Her dedication runs so deep that her dog Uki is even named after the Magic card Ukkima, Stalking Shadow.
In a media landscape where athlete hobbies are often treated as shallow PR talking points, Glenn's genuine passion for trading card games feels completely authentic. For a modern competitor navigating the intense pressure of international sports, having a dedicated offline community and a complex strategy game to obsess over provides a vital anchor. As Glenn prepares for her upcoming individual events, the entire gaming community is firmly in her corner.
