Obsidian Entertainment revealed major details for the upcoming free winter update to Grounded 2, introducing the vertical Garden region, new enemies, and the rideable Ladybuggy mount.
Obsidian Entertainment recently pulled back the curtain on the upcoming winter update for Grounded 2, offering players a deep dive into what comes next for the survival sequel. Speaking in an interview with creator Jake Lucky, the development team outlined a massive expansion centered around a brand-new region known as the Garden. While the initial Picnic area served as an onboarding tutorial that bridged the original game and its follow-up, the Garden aims to deliver a true sandbox challenge with distinct mechanics and environmental hazards.
At the heart of the new zone sits a massive greenhouse, emphasizing a heavy focus on verticality and vertical exploration. Players will navigate rooftops, scale agricultural structures like scarecrows, and harvest new flora such as pumpkins and carrots for crafting materials. Naturally, this new territory brings fresh threats. The update introduces a mix of returning creatures, fan-favorite cuts from the original development pipeline like the earwig, and brand-new bugs with specialized combat patterns, such as crickets that rely on high-powered kicks and defensive leg blocks.
To help players traverse the expanded map and tackle these tougher encounters, Obsidian is introducing the Ladybuggy, a mountable companion equipped with a crushing charge attack and an anti-air water cannon. Securing this rolling tank will require tracking down an egg and completing a specialized quest chain. As reported by Josh Broadwell over at Polygon, the update will be entirely free, though Obsidian has not yet locked down a definitive release date for when the content drops on servers.
