Nintendo's Switcheroo: OG Switch Prices Surge, Switch 2 Still Safe... For Now?
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
Nintendo's raising prices on the original Switch models in the US, blaming 'market conditions' and hinting at potential future price hikes for the Switch 2, games, and online services. It's a bit of a sting for gamers, but hey, at least we know to keep a watchful eye on our wallets.
Right, so Nintendo's decided to give our wallets a little nudge, and not in the friendly 'here's a discount' kinda way. According to IGN South Africa, the Big N's announced price hikes for the original Switch models (that's the OG, the OLED, and the Lite) in the US, effective August 3rd, 2025. And *gulp*, they're hinting that the Switch 2, games, and even the Nintendo Switch Online membership might not be safe forever. Blimey.
Basically, it seems 'market conditions' are to blame, which, let's be honest, usually translates to 'we want more money.' The Target website briefly showcased the new prices, which, if accurate, mean a fair jump: The standard Switch goes up to $339.99, the OLED hits $399.99, and even the Lite's now $229.99. Even that quirky Alarmo sound clock is getting a price boost – apparently, nostalgia ain’t cheap! Even the Joy-Cons are getting more pricey, at $100 for a pair. Crikey!
Now, Nintendo assures us that the Switch 2, its games (both physical and digital, for both generations of Switch) and the Nintendo Switch Online membership are safe... *for now*. They're also saying 'certain' Switch 2 accessories and 'select' amiibo will also see adjustments. But, and it's a big but, they've also added that price adjustments *may be necessary in the future*. Sound familiar? It's the classic 'we're not saying we will, but we're definitely not saying we won't' tactic.
IGN reports that Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners, reckons those pesky tariffs might be to blame. He pointed out the hefty tariffs on goods coming from Vietnam, China, and Japan, all of which Nintendo relies on for production. Basically, it costs more to make stuff, so we pay more. It’s as simple as that, and it will be passed down to the consumer every time.
Honestly, the timing is a bit suspect, innit? This news comes right after Nintendo revealed its first financial results since the Switch 2 launched in June. Sales are booming, the Switch 2 is flying off the shelves, and the OG Switch is apparently still holding its own. You'd think they'd be feeling generous, not greedy. But hey, that’s business, mate.
So, what does this all mean for us gamers? Well, if you've been holding off on buying a Switch, now might be the time to bite the bullet before prices go up even further. And keep a close eye on those Switch 2 prices – I reckon it's only a matter of time before they sneak up on us too. Time to start saving those pennies, folks. And hope that Nintendo don't pull the rug out from under us at the last minute!
