Polygon's hands-on preview of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort reveals a Switch 2 exclusive that blends Wii Sports classics with spiritual successors to Wave Race and Pilotwings.
Nintendo is leaning hard into its rich archive for its next major hardware rollout. According to a recent hands-on preview from Polygon, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort acts as a comprehensive greatest hits collection for the publisher's motion-control legacy. Built exclusively for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the game combines returning favorites like bowling, golf, and tennis with spiritual successors to beloved franchises like Wave Race, Pilotwings, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
The upgraded Joy-Con 2 hardware allows for much higher fidelity and more precise inputs across a wide variety of activities. Players can cruise around Wuhu Island on personal watercraft in Power Cruising, glide through the air in Prop Plane, or test out a surprisingly deep skateboarding mode that uses mouse-style controller movements for tricks. Traditional competitive stalwarts like archery and table tennis also return, benefiting heavily from the improved tracking capabilities of the new console.
While some additions like thumb wrestling feel more like casual novelty games, the overall package hits the sweet spot for modern multiplayer sessions and casual get-togethers. Nintendo is clearly banking on the universal appeal of pick-up-and-play mechanics to drive early platform adoption. The title is scheduled to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22.
