Nintendo Switch Online subscribers in Japan can play the critically acclaimed Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter remake for free from July 6 to July 12 as part of a special trial event.
Nintendo Switch owners with an active Japanese subscription have a limited window to experience one of last year's standout JRPG remakes without spending extra. According to a report by Game Rant, developer Nihon Falcom and Nintendo are teaming up for a special trial event featuring the critically acclaimed Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. Subscribers can jump into the full experience at no additional cost starting July 6 and running through July 12. This particular entry earned an impressive 87 on Metacritic following its 2025 release, winning over both longtime fans and newcomers with its transition to fully 3D visuals and a modernized hybrid combat system.
For those tracking the broader JRPG landscape, this trial represents a smart push by publishers to get niche heavy hitters into the hands of a broader audience. While the original release flew under the radar for casual players, the 1st Chapter remake successfully bridges classic storytelling depth with contemporary quality-of-life upgrades. Of course, players diving into the trial should note that the later stages of the adventure have drawn some mild critique regarding encounter variety, but the overall package remains a masterclass in modernizing heritage franchises.
Trials like this highlight how platform holders are utilizing subscription perks to drive engagement for single player narrative games. In an era where live service titles constantly demand daily logins, giving players a week to sink their teeth into a massive story-driven anime adventure offers a refreshing change of pace. If you meet the regional requirements and want to see what all the critical praise is about, you have until July 12 to make the most of the promotion.
