Nintendo Switch Online Expands Retro Library and Adds Another Nostalgic Startup Easter Egg

Nintendo Switch Online adds four classic retro games to its NES and Game Boy libraries, alongside a nostalgic new startup easter egg for the Game Boy app.

Nintendo is giving subscribers another blast from the past with the latest update to its retro catalog on Nintendo Switch Online. Players with a standard subscription can now access four classic titles across different platforms. The NES app adds the notoriously challenging platformer Ninja Gaiden 2: The Dark Sword of Chaos alongside the chaotic cooperative brawler Battletoads. Over on the Game Boy app, players can jump into Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters and the classic side-scrolling action of Bionic Commando.

Beyond the fresh additions to the game library, Nintendo has also rolled out Version 3.0.0 for the Game Boy app on both the original Switch and newer hardware. This update introduces a neat little nostalgia trip for veteran players, featuring a hidden boot up sequence complete with the classic startup screen and iconic audio. Fans can trigger this easter egg simply by twiddling the analog stick when launching the app.

This follows a trend of hardware callbacks that Nintendo previously introduced for the Game Boy Advance and GameCube apps. While modern gaming lives on cloud streaming, cross-play, and live service ecosystems, these retro drops remain a popular feature for players looking to revisit gaming history on the go.
