Nintendo Introduces Strict Playtime Rules to Block Switch 2 Scalpers

Nintendo is implementing a 50 hour playtime requirement on Nintendo Accounts to purchase multi language Nintendo Switch 2 consoles in Japan, aiming to block scalpers exploiting currency rates ahead of a system price hike.
Buying gaming hardware feels like an uphill battle lately. Between global RAM shortages driven by massive AI data center expansions and rising costs across Sony, Microsoft, and Valve ecosystems, players are already feeling the financial squeeze. Scalpers have only made things worse by exploiting currency fluctuations, specifically targeting cheaper multi language Japanese versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 to flip for profit. To combat this, Nintendo of Japan has stepped in with a refreshing policy update announced on X, requiring a Nintendo Account with at least 50 hours of actual Switch playtime before anyone can purchase the multi language console.
This move comes ahead of Nintendo's planned fifty dollar price increase slated for September, which will bump the console up to $499.99. Because the weaker yen has made importing Japanese hardware uniquely attractive for resellers, Nintendo is also canceling suspicious transactions and capping purchases at one console per qualified account. The region locked, Japan exclusive version is dodging these rules since it only supports Japanese text, but the global variant is now locked behind a genuine player verification wall.
For a community exhausted by botting, scalping rings, and hardware markups, seeing a major publisher actually enforce anti scalper measures is a welcome sight. While it will not solve the broader supply chain pressures affecting the entire industry right now, putting a fifty hour gameplay requirement in front of scalpers sets a strong precedent. If you are planning to pick up a Switch 2 and happen to have a well used library under your belt, getting your hands on one might just get a little less stressful.
