Nintendo Introduces Playtime Requirement to Combat Switch 2 Scalping

Nintendo is tackling Switch 2 scalping in Japan by requiring buyers of the international model to show at least 50 hours of playtime on their original Switch.
Hardware availability has always been a primary pain point for players, and scalpers continue to find ways to exploit high-demand console launches. According to a recent report by Game Rant, Nintendo is fighting back against opportunistic resellers in Japan by implementing a novel requirement for the international model of the Switch 2. Following a temporary sales pause prompted by suspicious hoarding behavior, prospective buyers now need to prove their gaming credentials before placing an order. Specifically, customers must demonstrate at least 50 hours of playtime logged on their original Nintendo Switch to qualify for purchase.
The strategy targets the higher-priced, multilingual version of the console, which has remained a primary target for automated bots and resellers since the system launched in June 2025. While Nintendo also offers a cheaper, region-locked domestic variant, the international model continues to see aggressive scalping pressure. By tying hardware purchases to established platform history and actual player engagement, Nintendo is attempting to filter out bad actors and ensure units land in the hands of genuine community members rather than inventory-flipping operations.
While this specific measure is currently isolated to the Japanese market, it highlights a growing desire across the industry to find practical solutions to hardware supply exploitation. Traditional queue systems and basic CAPTCHAs clearly fall short against sophisticated reseller networks. If this playtime verification model proves effective at protecting stock levels without overly frustrating legitimate buyers, we could see similar engagement-gated purchasing models adopted by other platform holders for future high-demand drops.
