Nintendo Explains the Reality Behind the Switch 2 Price Hike

Nintendo has detailed the economic factors behind the upcoming Switch 2 price increase, pointing to long-term surges in memory and component costs driven partly by the AI boom.
Nintendo has addressed the recent decision to increase the price of the Switch 2, pointing to sustained increases in component costs that are reshaping the hardware market. In a recent earnings call, translated and reported by Eurogamer, company president Shuntaro Furukawa explained that rising prices for computer memory and other essential hardware, alongside broader economic pressures like foreign exchange trends, forced the move. Furukawa noted that if these cost surges were temporary, Nintendo might have absorbed them, but the company anticipates these market pressures will continue over the medium to long term. Effective September 1st, the hardware will see a price increase in major regions, with US prices moving to $500 and European pricing shifting accordingly.
This adjustment places the Switch 2 alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series systems, both of which have seen multiple price increases over the current generation. Traditionally, console hardware drops in price as manufacturing matures and components become cheaper. This generation has broken that convention completely, driven in large part by heavy competition for memory and silicon from the booming generative AI sector. Nintendo managed to hold the line through the console's first year on the market, helping the system secure nearly 20 million sales following its launch in June 2025.
For players, this shift signals a maturing hardware landscape where the traditional console pricing model is struggling to survive against global economic pressures. As production costs remain stubbornly high, the hardware side of the gaming ecosystem is changing in ways that impact how platforms are built, priced, and sustained. While hardware price tags are never popular with the community, understanding the underlying market realities helps contextualize why even industry giants are adjusting their strategies for the long haul.
